Build a Robust Content Infrastructure With the Right CMS [Sponsored]

Here’s a burning question many marketers look to answer when figuring out how to optimize their content operations: What does an effective content infrastructure look like?

Ongoing advances in modern technology have made it easier to build a content roadmap that complements your organizational goals. Yet, as technological change continues to accelerate, it also challenges you to constantly monitor how customers engage with your content. What works well today won’t necessarily do so, say, a year from now.

Building your infrastructure around the right content management system (CMS) is your best defense against falling out of touch with evolving tech trends and consumer interests — or falling behind in adapting your content experience accordingly.

A CMS is imperative to successful content operations because it facilitates the effective delivery of your organization’s digital experiences. Think of it as the mitochondria of your content “cell”: It provides the power all your brand’s content functions need to run smoothly.

Because it allows you to create structured workflows that streamline content creation and management, the CMS you select can also impact how your customers experience your brand.

Ultimately, you want your CMS to be efficient, flexible, and innovative. That way, you won’t need to waste time troubleshooting issues on an outdated or incompatible system as trends evolve. Your CMS platform should adapt to your needs — not the other way around.

How can you ensure you achieve those benefits — and others — from your CMS implementation? Start with these two critical elements:

  1. Clearly defined goals. Any good digital infrastructure process starts with assessing your current infrastructure and outlining your priority goals. What features do you look for in a CMS? What kind of experience do you want to create for your customers? By simply documenting these goals, you could exponentially narrow the field of potential platform suitors.
  1. A digital web strategy. Establishing a digital web strategy enables you to make the most effective use of your chosen CMS. Enhancing your content across your platform is crucial for reaching a wider audience with all your content. Putting effort into creating SEO-friendly web content in your preferred CMS and utilizing the tools at your disposal significantly contributes to building a successful content infrastructure.

Enhance content agility, creativity, and security

Achieving optimized operational performance simply can’t happen today without the help of an efficient CMS. Content is deadline-driven, so it’s essential to manage, produce, and distribute your content in a streamlined manner. Further, having tools that accommodate the production and delivery of all the types of content your audience prefers is crucial to retaining their interest.

Having integration-ready systems helps avoid having to completely re-engineer your content infrastructure whenever a new objective emerges. A CMS with built-in integration capabilities also makes workflow more efficient, which gives you more bandwidth to focus on the quality of your content ideation, creation, and delivery efforts.

Your content marketing tools should also help keep your brand’s experience as secure as possible. Your CMS stores your content, so you need a trustworthy system to keep your data safe.

An integration-ready CMS can provide ongoing protection against unauthorized access to your content, as it allows for rapid, system-wide deployment of the latest safety features and rights management tools. This enables everyone on your team to keep their devices safe and maintain better compliance with your organization’s security protocols.

A streamlined, secure, and seamless infrastructure

The key to building an optimal content engine lies in assessing your current infrastructure and defining what needs should be met. A suitable CMS can integrate seamlessly with evolving technologies, strengthen adaptability across your enterprise, and remove barriers to creative success. So, take a minute, reflect on your content platform, and carefully consider your long-term goals. There are content management systems readily available to assist you.

IIM Bangalore breaks records with successful summer internship placements of 602 students

IIM Bangalore successfully completed summer internship placements of the largest-ever batch of 602 students in the Post Graduate Programme in Management and Post Graduate Programme in Business Analytics. During the placement week, 484 students (437 PGP and 47 PGP-BA) secured placements, with an additional 115 students (89 PGP and 26 PGP-BA) placed in a subsequent process, including 12 students with disabilities. Three PGP students found internships independently.

Prof. Ganesh N Prabhu, Chairperson, Career Development Services, and faculty and Chairperson of the Strategy area, IIM Bangalore, said, “The rolling summer placements saw many first-time recruiters offering roles in strategy, marketing, products, finance, analytics and investments – some of the projects offered were more interesting and challenging than those offered during the summer placement week.”

Accenture Strategy led consulting firms with 45 of the total 158 offers. Despite this, the consulting ratio dipped as finance, banking, and investment firms increased offers to 130. FMCG and retail offered 69 positions, manufacturing had 55 in supply chain and new products, and e-commerce gave 45 in digital marketing and cards. IT offered 43 in consulting and product management, conglomerates presented 41 in leadership, foundations made 29 in governance consulting, healthcare gave 19 in marketing, and Analytics/AI had 13 in new business applications.

Kids who consume energy drinks are more prone to mental health disorders, study finds

Energy drinks could pose a risk to young brains, according to new research.

Those who consumed energy drinks — which are intended to boost energy through the use of caffeine or other stimulants — were shown to have a higher risk of mental health issues, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts.

These findings stem from a review by Fuse, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health at Teesside University and Newcastle University in the U.K.

CAFFEINE, THE WONDER DRUG? STUDY SUGGESTS MORE COFFEE COULD LOWER BODY FAT AND PREVENT TYPE 2 DIABETES

In the review, published in the journal Public Health, researchers looked at data from 57 studies of over 1.2 million children and young people from more than 21 countries who consumed energy drinks.

The researchers conducted this review as a follow-up to an initial review in 2016.

“We have found an even greater list of mental and physical health outcomes associated with children and young people consuming energy drinks,” lead author Amelia Lake, professor of public health nutrition at Teesside University, told Fox News Digital.

THESE ARE THE WORST DRINKS FOR YOUR HEALTH, ACCORDING TO NUTRITIONISTS

“We repeated [the review] only to find an ever-growing evident space that suggests the consumption of these drinks is associated with negative health outcomes.”

The caffeine content of energy drinks ranges from 50 mg to 505 mg per serving, compared to 90 mg in 8.45 ounces of coffee, 50 mg in 8.45 ounces of tea and 34 mg in 16.9 ounces of soda, the researchers noted.

Based on the findings, the researchers and other U.K. health organizations are calling for the government to ban sales of energy drinks to children under age 16.

“This evidence suggests that energy drinks have no place in the diets of children and young people,” said Lake.

“Policymakers should follow the example from countries that have placed age restrictions on their sales to children.”

Experts weigh in

Erin Palinski-Wade, a New Jersey-based registered dietitian, was not involved in the new research but said its findings did not surprise her.

“Energy drinks are not a safe choice for children and no safe guidelines have been established for caffeine consumption in those under the age of 18,” she told Fox News Digital.

“This evidence suggests that energy drinks have no place in the diets of children and young people.”

Caffeine has a half-life of six to eight hours, she noted — which means it takes that long for it to leave the system.

“Even small amounts of caffeine can impact quality and quantity of sleep, and poor sleep is directly correlated with a decline in both mental and physical health — in adults as well as children,” Palinski-Wade noted.

“Energy drinks are not a safe choice for children and no safe guidelines have been established for caffeine consumption in those under the age of 18,” a nutritionist told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

“A lack of quality sleep can lead to impaired cognitive functions such as decision-making, conflict resolution, working memory and learning, along with changes in behavior, mood and an increased risk of depression.”

Insufficient sleep can also negatively impact a child’s brain development, she added, which can lead to learning problems and more frequent negative emotions.

“A lack of sleep can also impact memory and concentration, making it harder to perform academically, especially if sleep is chronically interrupted,” the expert said.

COFFEE VS. TEA: WHICH DRINK IS ‘BETTER’ FOR YOU?

Even in healthy adults, daily caffeine intake should not exceed 400 mg per day, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“With an average energy drink containing 200 mg of caffeine or more, it can be easy to exceed this intake, even as an adult,” said Palinski-Wade. “For children, these drinks are best avoided.”

Dr. Alex Dimitriu, a psychiatrist and sleep doctor who is also the founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry & Sleep Medicine in California, was not involved in the study but offered his expert input.

“The concern with any exogenous substance in children under the age of 21 is that the human brain is not done forming until people are about the age of 26,” Dimitriu told Fox News Digital.

“For this reason, substance use, including energy drinks, can markedly alter development, and certainly build patterns that resemble drug-seeking behavior as children look to external ‘fixes,’ for possible mood, focus or energy symptoms.”

DRINKING COFFEE ON A DAILY BASIS CAN EXTEND YOUR LIFE: NEW STUDY

The impact of energy drinks on sleep is particularly concerning, as the effect can be “bidirectional,” noted Dimitriu.

“Poor sleep may lead kids to use energy drinks, and energy drinks can lead to poor sleep,” he said.

“Because sleep is essential for brain development, anything that diminishes sleep quality can affect cognitive and emotional performance, both in the long and short term.”

“Because sleep is essential for brain development, anything that diminishes sleep quality can affect cognitive and emotional performance, both in the long and short term,” an expert told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

Many people with undiagnosed ADHD also tend to gravitate toward stimulants, energy drinks and caffeine, Dimitriu pointed out — “so it is essential to also understand what the motivation is for children using these substances, and to treat underlying causes.”

“Lack of sleep is a huge cause of emotional and cognitive disturbance, for both adults and children in the U.S.,” he added.

Potential limitations

The review did have some limitations, the researchers acknowledged.

Some of the included studies were lacking in quality and design, while others did not clearly define the ages of the participants. They also do not prove that energy drinks cause the observed health issues, the journal entry stated.

“We accept the evidence is from mostly cross-sectional studies, exploring association rather than causation,” Lake told Fox News Digital.

“Experimental studies to establish causation have both ethical and feasibility issues.”

Industry associations and regulators react

In response to the study, a spokesperson from the American Beverage Association (ABA) provided a statement to Fox News Digital.

“It’s important to note that neither study found that energy drinks cause sleep problems or any health issues and that the authors acknowledge there may be other reasons for their findings,” the American Beverage Association said in a statement to Fox News Digital. (iStock)

“Energy drinks have been enjoyed by billions of people around the world for more than 30 years and are recognized by government food safety agencies worldwide, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Health Canada and the European Food Safety Authority, as safe for consumption,” the group said.

“It’s important to note that neither study found that energy drinks cause sleep problems or any health issues — and that the authors acknowledge there may be other reasons for their findings.”

The ABA spokesperson also noted that a mainstream energy drink contains 80mg of caffeine per 8 oz. serving — “which is approximately half the amount of caffeine found in a similar-sized serving of coffeehouse coffee.”

The association added, “America’s leading energy drink manufacturers voluntarily go beyond all federal requirements when it comes to responsible labeling and marketing practices, including displaying total caffeine content from all sources and to not promote excessive or unduly rapid consumption of their drinks.”

Energy drink can

“The FDA is reviewing the findings of the paper,” the agency told Fox News Digital in a statement.  (iStock)

When contacted for comment, the U.K. Food Standards Agency (FDA) directed Fox News Digital to its guidelines for caffeine consumption by children and teens, as specified below.

“Single doses of caffeine up to 3mg/kg body weight (bw) and daily intakes of caffeine up to 3mg/kg bw do not raise safety concerns. For a 10-year-old child weighing 30kg, this would work out to around 90mg of caffeine. Even a small can of energy drink can contain up to 200mg of caffeine and exceed the recommended daily intake for a child.”

Fox News Digital also reached out to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting comment.

“In general, the FDA does not comment on specific studies, but evaluates them as part of the body of evidence to further our understanding about a particular issue and assist in our mission to protect public health,” an agency spokesperson said. “The FDA is reviewing the findings of the paper.”

Restaurant Review: Avartana Brings Its Soulful South Indian Experiments To Mumbai

I never knew I would enjoy rasam poured from a French press into a Martini glass. I didn’t realise my papad could lend amazing crunch to my dessert. I never imagined I’d taste doodhi in the form of spaghetti. This was until I dined at Avartana at ITC Maratha in Mumbai. My recent meal at the preview of ITC’s flagship contemporary South Indian restaurant was eye-opening in more ways than one. The original Avartana at ITC Grand Chola in Chennai was ranked 30th among Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2023. It was one of only three Indian restaurants to be featured on the prestigious list. Its Mumbai outpost continues its legacy of celebrating the mystical yet modern aromas from Southern India.

Avartana offers five tasting menus, each inspired by different motifs and storytelling objectives: the seven-course Maya (mystical), the nine-course Bela (beautiful), the chef-special eleven-course Jiaa (soulful), the thirteen-course Anika (grace) and the thirteen-course seafood special Tara (sparkling). At the preview, we enjoyed a selection of dishes from each menu, aptly united under the title of “Kimaya” (divine). We had chosen to try the vegetarian menu and were pleased to note that the variety and ingenuity were equally matched with that of the non-veg section.

The amuse bouche was a mini Potato Nest topped with a pineapple and mint sphere. It broke apart with satisfying crispiness, flooding our palette with a refreshing burst of flavour. The first true taste of Avartana’s signature style was in the Distilled Tomato Rasam that followed. The broth was poured over fresh coriander leaves and cherry tomatoes in a French press. It was then served to us in Martini glasses. Two sips were all that were needed to convince us – we could have this every day! The understated heat of the black pepper and the smoothness of the rasam combined to give it a uniquely healing effect.

The rasam epitomised the delightful balance that Avartana manages to master – the presentation of ingredients is unfamiliar, but the taste is undeniably wholesome. The dishes are experiments with a soul. They are not fancy reinterpretations that confound and leave one scrambling to find a silver lining. Creativity and thoughtfulness radiate from the menu, plating, service and decor.

After making a mental note to request rasam refills, we began with the courses. For vegetarians, the first to arrive was the Tempered Bottle Gourd. The humble doodhi was virtually unrecognisable on my plate in its spaghetti-like avatar. I was almost suspicious. This feeling of unfamiliarity is a contrived one, Chef Deepti Jadhav tells us. She explains that Avartana aims to create that vague dissonance between the conventional and the unconventional. It is not here to deliver what we are “used to”. It is here to challenge our notions of what these simple, everyday ingredients can be turned into. But once you dig in, Chef Deepti assures us, you’ll find the roots.

Drumstick Dumpling

She was not wrong. The dish in front of us was made of doodhi. But we had a newfound appreciation for its texture and coolness. We (delicately) slurped it down with plum chutney and a multi-seed crisp. The Andhra mango ginger used to flavour the gourd is one of several hyperlocal ingredients that the restaurant takes pride in including. Several of the key ingredients are directly sourced from the Southern regions, as the team wants to replicate the charm of the original Avartana, Chef Deepti clarifies. The next novelty was the Drumstick Dumpling with moringa broth. Indians are no strangers to different vegetable stuffings inside dumplings and dim sums. Although uncommon, let us tell you, that the choice of a drumstick filling, like this one, works marvellously.

Next, we feasted with childlike enthusiasm on the perfectly Crispy Chilli Potato – who could resist? It was spiced with Andhra-style vepudu masala and adorned with a buttermilk sphere. Another favourite was the Asparagus & Coconut Stew served with Idiyappam. Asparagus is not something one would usually find on South Indian menus. Chef Nikhil Nagpal, the brand custodian, explained how the vegetable was chosen for its ability to keep the focus on the flavours of the stew. Additionally, we discovered that the stringy idiyappams pair quite well with the crunch of asparagus too.

The ambience provided a harmonious backdrop to our culinary experiences. The banana leaf – the quintessential South Indian symbol – is a recurrent motif incorporated into the decor. The bright lighting is meant to represent the vibrant sunlight that graces the Southern states. The flooring has been inspired by traditional designs found in temples over there. The chandelier brings to mind the design of the cove of houseboats on the backwaters of Kerala. The crockery also serves as a reminder of the restaurant’s roots. Some of the courses are plated on granite serving dishes sourced directly from Mahabalipuram. One of the more colourful pieces is crafted with resin from Pondicherry. Diners can thus expect a genuinely holistic experience.

As we savoured the courses, we sipped on a wonderful mocktail called Pickle Jar – a concoction of raw mango, celery, coriander and lime juice, with a hint of red chilli powder. It was slightly tangy and wholly refreshing and didn’t go overboard with sourness. We loved the touch of serving it in a glass that actually resembled a pickle jar. The same can be said of the exquisite lemon leaf sorbet, which was served next as the palate cleanser.

Spinach And Curd Cheese. Photo Credit: Avartana

Our enjoyment of the meal did not waver at any point. We were fascinated yet again by the delectable transformation of an everyday veggie when the Spinach And Curd Cheese arrived. The green leaves were shaped like a potli and enclosed a yummy dahi tempered with mustard seeds and onion. It was served with an aerated rice cake and South Indian-style salsa. The dish as a whole was unlike any palak sabzi or snack we’ve tasted. Even picky eaters won’t complain about greens in this delicious form.

The next course was all about indulgence. The Uthukuli Morel was among the most memorable parts of our evening. The rich sauce pays homage to Uthukuli, a small town in Tamil Nadu renowned for its butter. It is served with butter toffee and mini Malabar parottas, which were also slathered with butter. This was the only course that felt heavier on the system but we had no regrets. The flakiness of the parottas and the exquisite amount of butter, when relished in such a setting, reminded us of the decadence of croissants and fine French pastries. But there was something special about seeing an Indian indulgence in the spotlight in this specific manner.

Jackfruit Rice with Okra Yogurt

After this buttery binge, the Jackfruit Rice, steamed in a banana leaf, had a grounding effect. The jackfruit was beautifully cooked and fell apart easily as we scooped up the rice and okra yoghurt. The delicacy has a hometown feeling attached to it. Even if you’re not from the South, the dish seems like one you would eat and cherish at a grandparents’ house.

Raw Mango Pudding with Ghee Candle. Photo Credit: Avartana

Both the dessert courses we tasted had theatrical elements to them. Flavour continued to reign, so we could not complain. The Raw Mango Pudding comes with a ghee candle that can be actually lit. As it melts, it lends the sweet a quick jolt of warmth. Ensure you quickly crush the accompanying papad over it and relish the pudding.

Fennel Panna Cotta

Fennel Panna Cotta. Photo Credit: Avartana

The next course was more hands-on. The Fennel Panna Cotta is designed like a bird’s nest. The sparkly nest is crafted with caramelised sugar and shelters a sweet, scrumptious egg. The egg ‘white’ is the panna cotta, while the shell is made of cocoa butter. There’s a yolk as well, made using mango and ginger puree. A small hammer is used to crack the egg and out flows the yolk! It’s a pleasing visual spectacle; but even if you’re not impressed, the mastery demonstrated in the balance of sweetness will win you over.

Avartana breathes magic into mundane ingredients at every step. We often compare a fantastic dining experience to a journey filled with discovery and adventure. This metaphor has never been more fitting than in the case of Avartana, Mumbai. We would gladly retrace our steps and make the voyage again.

  • Where: Avartana, ITC Maratha, Mumbai – A Luxury Collection Hotel, Sahar Airport Road, Andheri East, Mumbai – 400099 (Near International Airport, Ashok Nagar)
  • When: Dinner Only All Days, 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm (Prior Table Bookings with Menu Preference are recommended)
  • Price: INR 2500 – 4750 plus taxes, per guest, depending on the course selected.

Yemen's Houthis threaten more attacks on U.S., British warships

Yemen’s Houthi group said on Wednesday it would keep up attacks on U.S. and British warships in the Red Sea in what it called acts of self-defense, stoking fears of long-term disruptions to world trade.

In a statement, the group’s military spokesperson said all American and British warships participating in “aggression” against its country were targets.

The U.S. and Britain have launched strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen and re-designated the movement on a list of terrorist groups as turmoil from the Israel-Palestine conflict spreads through the region.

The Houthis, who control the most populous parts of Yemen, have been attacking ships in and around the Red Sea, saying they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza conflict.

The Houthis fired missiles at the U.S. warship USS Gravely, the statement added. On Tuesday night, the U.S. military’s central command said they had shot down one anti-ship cruise missile fired from Yemen towards the Red Sea with no damage reported.

The Houthi attacks have primarily targeted container vessels. Many fuel tankers have kept using the route.

Some shipping companies have suspended transits through the Red Sea, which is accessed from the Gulf of Aden, and taken much longer, costlier journeys around Africa to avoid being attacked.

Houthis say they will persist with their military operations until a ceasefire is agreed in Gaza and food and medicine are allowed into the enclave to ease a grave humanitarian crisis.

Madonna’s Celebration Tour Draws Fans Clad in Leather and Lace

Madonna performed at Madison Square Garden on Monday night as part of her Celebration Tour, a lavish stage spectacle devoted to her catalog of hits as the Queen of Pop. During “Like a Prayer,” she sang from a spinning carousel filled with jumbo crucifixes and shirtless men. When she performed “Vogue,” she invited Kelly Ripa onto the stage to join her in judging the ballroom moves of her dancers with scorecards.

“I don’t know when I’m going to be back here playing again, but I’m doing this show like it’s my last show,” Madonna, 65, told the crowd. “And I’m doing this show like it’s my first show.”

Before the concert, the scene outside the arena resembled a fashion runway as Madonna fans arrived to serve up style tributes to her. Men emerged from the subway wearing black biker boots and leather jackets. Some women had drawn fake beauty spots onto their upper lips. At a subterranean pregame bar in Penn Station, while hits like “Holiday” and “Papa Don’t Preach” piped from a speaker, Sophy LeMay, a corporate accountant, wore fingerless lace gloves as she nursed a drink.

Fans shared their opinions about the lawsuit filed by two concertgoers against Madonna, who has become known as an unpunctual stage performer, accusing her of false advertising and negligent misrepresentation for going on late at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in December. (Her representatives said that they “intend to defend this case vigorously.”)

“It is what it is,” Julio Alvarez, who wore a bowler hat, said. “She’s Madonna.”

“I’ve traveled all the way from Oklahoma to see her,” added Kevin Smith, who brandished a black riding crop. “I’ll stay awake until 1 a.m. to see her if I need to.”

In the edited interviews below, fans reflected on Madonna’s enduring cultural relevance.

Communications consultant

Why is she important to you? All roads lead to Madonna. Look, I love Beyoncé, but no one will ever take the crown from her. No one can take away what she’s given us. And what I mean by that is young queer folks who once knew no better. She led us through the wilderness.

Do you mind an unpunctual diva? I’ve made sure to be prepared for it if that happens. I had sleepy tea, took a nap earlier. I’m moisturized.

Artist manager

Why is she important to you? Madonna was specifically responsible for my sexual awakening. She helped me find myself.

If you could spend a day with Madonna, what would you do? My PG-13 answer to that would be: I’d love to talk to her about the Danceteria days while giving her a foot massage.

Do you mind a tardy diva? A wizard is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.

Artist and designer

You say you once met Madonna? Yes, I met her back when she first arrived in New York City, back when she was a no one. She was just a girl from Michigan. Then she began hanging out with all the gay guys in the East Village and they enhanced her. She became brazen in a sexy way.

Criminal justice educator

Why do you love her? Because we’re going into her fifth decade, and she’s still going strong. People keep saying it’s her last tour, but I don’t believe it. This will not be her last tour. No one tells Mick Jagger or Paul McCartney that they need to stop touring. I wonder why.

If you could spend a day with Madonna, what would you do? It would be fun to go on a fashion shopping trip together where she’s picking up the bill.

Hospitality trainer

Why is she important to you? Because of her relentless support for the queer movement. And as a cultural icon, she’s immortal.

If you could meet Madonna, what would you do? I’d ask her about her gay friends during the AIDS crisis. How she felt about that time in New York, and how she coped with it.

Teacher

Why is Madonna important to you? She’s always been a style icon. She helped support artists and designers like Keith Haring and Vivienne Westwood. And everyone knows the Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra from the Blond Ambition Tour.

Why do you love her? Because Madonna’s staying power can’t be questioned. She’s a chameleon. Always changing. Always pushing the buttons. And she’ll never stop.

Bartender

If you could spend a day with Madonna, what would you do? I’d rather spend a night out with Madonna. Go to a strip club together, have lots of drinks and party until the morning.

Do you mind a tardy diva? She’s the queen. She can come on stage as late as she wants to.

Food runner

If you could meet Madonna, what would you do? I’d ask how she gets over her anxieties and insecurities. How she is able to turn all the scrutiny that society puts onto her into her fuel and her engine as an artist. How she lets it move her forward.

Why do you love her? She sticks to her guns and deeply understands her audience.

Corporate accountant

Why is she important to you? Because when I saw her perform one night earlier during this tour, she made me feel like a teenager again. I hope she never stops touring.

Cat Owner’s Manual for Pain Part 2: Misconceptions and Treatments

Hi, I’m Dr. Lauren! Read my introduction to learn more about me and my two adventurous cats, Pancake and Tiller.

In the continuation of this two-part series on Pain in Cats: an Owners’ Manual (you can read the first part on Recognizing Pain here), we look at the misconceptions of feline pain, which abound. As well, we can touch on the action items that can help you be the best advocate for pain in your cat, and resolving it. To recap, you are the best advocate (or advo-cat) for your feline, so the more knowledge you have, the better we as vets can help you address any concerns. So, let’s jump straight in.

Common Misconceptions About Cats In Pain

There are a lot of misconceptions about pain and how it shows in cats. In part, this is because they are fantastic at hiding pain. In large part, this is because they can be fairly subtle with their body language and the signals they send.

Misconception: Cats always show when they are in pain.

Truth: Actually, many don’t, or do so very subtly.

Misconception: A purring cat is a happy cat.

Truth: Cats purr when nervous, and in pain, as well as when they are happy.

Misconception: Because they are eating, they can’t have pain.

Truth: This is a very common misconception I discuss with clients. Cats will eat well in spite of some pretty terrible dental disease. So never use this as an indication that their dental health is fine, or that they don’t need dental care. Routine annual examinations are critical to detect these issues early! Some of the patients I see with the healthiest appetites have teeth literally falling out of their mouths!

Misconception: Pain is normal in certain situations.

Truth: Any pain should be investigated, even if your cat has recently had major surgery. Cats don’t need to be in pain, due to the many treatment options that are available in modern feline medicine. A painful cat is not necessary, and does not help the healing process (by keeping them quiet)—that’s a myth. In fact, research in humans shows that pain delays healing, and we believe this to be true in cats, as well.

Misconception: Using opioids prescribed for my cat can cause constipation or opioid addiction.

Truth: In clinical practice, opioids seem to almost never lead to constipation in the cats I’ve worked with. So, if your vet prescribes them, use them as directed. Similarly, many clients I’ve worked with are concerned about their cat developing an opioid addiction: it doesn’t work that way in cats.

Misconception: Human pain medications are OK for use in cats.

Truth: Without a doubt, they aren’t. Use what your vet prescribes, and nothing else.

Now that we’ve covered the common causes in feline pain at home, how to recognize them, and the misconceptions around pain, let’s get to the real crux of the matter. Once you identify pain in your cat, what do you do next? This is the critical part of the equation, as it allows your cat to receive the treatment they need.

Getting an appointment for pain in your cat:

  • Take video: a video is a great tool to capture the behavior you are seeing at home, which is often not replicated in a clinic!
  • Next, speak to your vet clinic, and book an appointment. Critical tip: Provide them with the video before an appointment (either via email, or a file-sharing service such as Gmail Drive) so they have the opportunity to see it before your cat’s appointment. Professional secret: we will often share such videos with colleagues in the clinic and view it together, which means you will often be getting second and third opinions on your video, which is all the better for your cat (and free of charge to you!)
  • Do research beforehand, on what your cat is displaying, and what tests or treatments might be available. Bring a written list of questions, so you don’t forget to ask them. Expect that bloodwork may be needed, as may additional imaging such as x-rays. Sometimes, this can not all be done at the same appointment.
  • Attend the appointment.
  • If you have concerns, and they aren’t addressed, it’s ok to ask for a second opinion! Seriously, I’ve never met a vet that minds. We want you, and your cat, to get the best care, and to be happy with the outcome. Sometimes you don’t bond well with a vet, or like their approach, or simply need things explained in a different way. Or you think you see something they don’t. Remember, you know your cat better than we do – so don’t hesitate to advocate for them.

Closely observing your cat before a vet appointment can help you identify any problems and get appropriate treatment.

Top Tips for Pain Treatments in Cats

Lastly, I wanted to share some tips from a veterinarian’s perspective, that can help you better manage pain in your cat. These are things that as a professional, I’d love for you to know, but often don’t have time to fully discuss in an appointment. Or, sometimes, we discuss it, but given the amount of information that cat owners have to process in any given appointment, I’m surprised anything is remembered!

  • Know that many feline medications come in a liquid, and a pill form – so decide if one will be easier for your cat. If in doubt, I recommend pills (aka tablets), as they can sometimes be put into food, which skips the need to pill your cat. (Churus are an amazing tool to hide pills for cats, by the way!) On the other hand, if you are giving liquid, the volumes are often fairly large, and if your cat spits it out, then you don’t know if you need to repeat the dose, and if so, how much.
  • Here is a good video for pilling your cat. This is the method I use myself—a cat facing away from me is easier to work with. Also, tilting their head up slightly opens their mouth naturally, making it easier to give the medication.
  • Transdermal patches are also an option for some medications, so are injections. For cats that hate having their mouths touched, these can be better alternatives!
  • Quick-dissolving tablets are another option for some medications, but I’ve not had good success as a professional getting cats to understand the theory of these! So, I often avoid these.
  • Not all pain meds work well for all cats. If your cat has been prescribed something, and you don’t feel it works, don’t hesitate to ask for a different option. Similarly, if a medication causes vomiting or diarrhea, speak with your veterinarian to find another option.
  • Generics vs Brand Name medications: Much as in people, there shouldn’t be much in the difference…. But sometimes, there is. We don’t fully understand why, as the active ingredients are the same. Sometimes, additional additives may be the culprit, sometimes not. But if you feel a brand name medication works better than a generic brand or vice versa, don’t hesitate to request the alternative form.

In the end, cats are lovely mysteries, and as cat owners, we want nothing but the best for them. I hope this Cat Owners Manual on Pain is informative, and allows you opportunities to best advocate for your feline.

Mumbai property registrations rise 21% y-o-y in January

Mumbai saw 10,927 units registered in January, up over a fifth from year ago and the highest registrations for the month in 12 years. Around 80 per cent of the registrations were residential units.

The State government earned revenue of ₹757 crore from the registrations, up 9.4 per cent on year, State government data showed. The registrations were however, lower compared to December when more than 12,000 units were registered with ₹932 crore of revenue. Mumbai accounts for around half the property market in the country in terms of value.

Significant surge

According to Knight Frank India’s analysis around 58 per cent of the registered properties were worth over ₹1 crore. The data also showed that there was an increase in the share of apartments measuring up to 500 square feet at 48 per cent from 35 per cent year ago. There was a dip in the share of houses in the size range 500 to 1000 square feet at 43 per cent from 48 per cent year ago. There was also a steep dip in the share of larger sized houses.

“The sustained strength in the premium segment, marked by a significant surge to 58 per cent in January sales share, underscores the market’s resilience and attractiveness,” said Knight Frank India’s CMD Shishir Baijal. He said the positive trajectory was expected to continue “especially with the anticipated strong economic momentum and potential easing of interest rates throughout the year, fostering a conducive environment for homebuyers.”
