The most exciting thing, however, is the launch of new maps, game modes, weapons and items, many of which can be unlocked via the Season 4 Battle Pass. As you can see from the Season 4 roadmap further down the page, new Battle Pass Operators include Soap, Void and Hammer, alongside Copy and Dupe for Blackcell owners. Needless to say, the Battle Pass will also give fans the ability to unlock some new weapons, such as the Marksman Rifle and Sledgehammer.

Modern Warfare 3 players will also be pleased to hear that Tokyo and Paris maps will be added to the game at launch.

BYD’s new hybrids can get from Melbourne to Brisbane with range to spare

Chinese car giant BYD isn’t stopping its development of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology, revealing a new system it claims is capable of driving for more than 2000km without refuelling or recharging.

BYD’s newly launched Qin L and Seal 06 sedans feature its fifth-generation ‘DM-i’ PHEV system, with the hybrid technology unlocking a claimed 2100km of driving range when the vehicle’s fuel tank and battery are full.

The bold claim of a 2000km-plus driving range only applies to top-spec sedans which utilise a 15.87kWh battery pack and a 160kW/260Nm electric motor – good for 120km of claimed driving range on its own – to supplement the 1.5-litre, 74kW/126Nm petrol engine.

Lesser variants are available with a 10.08kWh battery and 120kW/210Nm motor, and feature 80km of electric-only driving range. All versions are front-wheel drive with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

It’s worth noting these claims are made against the lenient CLTC electric and NEDC petrol lab test cycles used in China, which aren’t as strict as the WLTP standard which is most commonly used in Australia and Europe.

According to BYD, even with its battery holding a low state of charge, the PHEV powertrain consumes only 2.9L/100km on the NEDC test cycle.

By comparison, the BYD Sealion 6 – the brand’s only PHEV on sale in Australia – manages a claimed 1.1L/100km with a fully charged 18.3kWh battery and a more powerful front electric motor.

Pricing in China for the two models ranges from 99,800 yuan (A$21,100) for the least expensive, shortest range variants to 139,800 yuan (A$29,570) for the long-range flagship.

For context, the electric BYD Seal sedan is priced from 179,800 yuan ($37,130) in China, though it’s about 34 per cent more expensive in Australia, starting from $49,888 before on-road costs.

BYD has recently started adding PHEVs to its Australian lineup in the form of the Sealion 6, with the upcoming Shark ute to follow. The local division hasn’t confirmed any other PHEVs as yet.

Earlier this month, David Smitherman, CEO for BYD’s local distributor EVDirect, told CarExpert the brand was aiming for 100 per cent growth in 2024, then 100 per cent again in 2025 – potentially reaching 50,000 annual sales by the middle of the decade.

Last year, its electric-only lineup notched up 12,438 sales, consisting of 11,042 Atto 3 SUVs, 925 Dolphin hatchbacks, and 471 Seal sedans.

Paytm Clears the Air: No Discussions with Adani Group for Stake Acquisition

On January 31, the RBI imposed business restrictions on PPBL due to repeated violations of norms and non-compliance with multiple regulations.

Digital payments firm Paytm announced on Wednesday that it is not in discussions to sell a stake, refuting an earlier media report.

Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, is discussing with Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma to acquire a stake, according to a report by the Times of India, which cited sources familiar with the matter.

“We hereby clarify that the abovementioned news item is speculative and the company is not engaged in any discussions in this regard. We have always made and will continue to make disclosures in compliance with our obligations under the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015,” said the company in an official statement.

What did the report indicate?

According to the TOI report, Adani Group, Chairman, Gautam Adani is interested in acquiring a stake in One 97 Communications, the company behind the mobile wallet Paytm. However, Paytm has denied any such development.

According to the TOI report, Paytm founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma met with Adani Group chief Gautam Adani on May 28 at the group’s Ahmedabad headquarters to “finalise the details of a deal.”

“We hereby clarify that the abovementioned news item is speculative and the company is not engaged in any discussions in this regard,” Paytm said in reaction to the report.

If the deal between the two first-generation entrepreneurs succeeds and Adani enters the fintech market, it will compete with companies like Google Pay, Walmart-owned PhonePe, and Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Financial.

RBI Action On Paytm Payments Bank

On January 31, the RBI imposed business restrictions on Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) due to repeated violations of norms and non-compliance with multiple regulations. The banking regulator prohibited PPBL from accepting new deposits and conducting credit transactions starting February 29.

In March 2024, PPBL was prohibited from onboarding new clients. This decision followed an audit report highlighting “persistent non-compliances and ongoing material supervisory concerns” at the bank. Since the RBI’s action, Paytm’s shares have lost more than 50 percent of their value, significantly impacting investors’ wealth.

Meanwhile, fueled by speculation that the Adani Group might be eyeing a stake in Paytm, One97 Communications saw its shares hit the upper circuit of 5 percent at Rs 359.55 on the BSE at 09:18 AM on Wednesday.

The crypto markets appear to have a long-term impact on the events as the prices continue their usual trend of consolidation within a narrow range. Although the consolidation was followed by a brief upswing, the bulls appear to have been exhausted as the buying volume is below par. Amid the rising attention over memecoins, the most popular one, Shiba Inu (SHIB), has lost traction, and hence the price has failed to attract the required volume. 

In the past couple of days, after the launch of the ETH ETF, the markets have turned slightly volatile. Hence, the SHIB price is also gaining some traction and as a result, it is trying hard to break above the sluggish trend to display a major one soon. However, considering the current trade setup, this move may not be as easy as the price is approaching a ‘bearish capitulated’ zone. 

The SHIB price has been trading in an ascending manner for a while, as the lower trend line has been acting as a strong support. The recent volatility that kicked into the space, caused the price to print consecutive bullish candles that lifted the levels within the resistance of an ascending triangle. Although a breakout attempt has occurred at the moment a bullish close above the zone may validate the upswing. 

Moreover, the price has reached the upper range of the Gaussian Channel and a close above these levels may trigger a fresh bullish case. On the other hand, the RSI is ascending, suggesting the price may remain elevated and reach the upper resistance zone between $0.00003 and $0.000032. To do so, the buying pressure is required to increase with a rise in the trader’s activity, which could attract more liquidity. 

Therefore, it is very crucial to monitor the Shiba Inu (SHIB) price action until the day’s close, as a small mistake may cause a breakdown. A daily close within or below the resistance zone can validate a bearish momentum, which may potentially lead to further downward movement.

Why Holding Attention Isn’t a Worthwhile Content Strategy Anymore

You’d think that a new company with the resources of OpenAI would have a straightforward path to building trust. They had no legacy brand problems to unwind, no historical scandals to overcome, and no CEO constantly planting foot into mouth. Until recently.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, seems determined to avoid the straightforward path to trust. Sheesh — it’s almost as if they’re trying to sabotage the brand.

Here’s the latest example: When the company launched new voice models with GPT-4o last week, many people noted how much the one called Sky sounded like Scarlett Johansson, who voiced the AI assistant in the 2013 movie Her. Before the launch event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman published a one-word post on X that said simply, “her.”

Scarlett Johansson revealed that OpenAI had asked to license her voice. She declined the offer twice — once when originally asked a year ago and again a few days before the product’s release. The company says it hired a different actress. Yet the result eerily echoes Johansson’s original performance. Cue the potential lawsuits and bad press for OpenAI’s brand.

Declining returns from the attention economy

The OpenAI vs. Scarlett Johansson beef is only the latest example of how the attention economy has reached peak valuation.

For years, marketers have tried a range of things to attract audience and buyer attention. On one end of the spectrum, you have the art and science of attempting to manipulate algorithms for visibility in search and social media. On the other end, you have “rage-baiting” — a tactic that involves stoking outrage to increase content engagement.

Some like attention to a currency. Now, its value is waning compared with a much more powerful rival — trust.

Brand trust rises in importance

As the old saying goes, trust is the hardest thing to find and the easiest thing to lose. And trust is in deep crisis worldwide.

The 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer intro highlights the challenge OpenAI and other tech companies face. The authors wrote:

“Rapid innovation offers the promise of a new era of prosperity, but instead risks exacerbating trust issues, leading to further societal instability and political polarization.”

Put simply: Trust in companies, media, and government erodes as leaders value attention over trust. Governmental politicians stoop to high-school-level insults; business leaders say outrageous things to stay in the press; and marketing departments bend over backward for that short-term sugar high of the click.

Ignore this decline of trust at your peril. Developing and demonstrating a trustworthy relationship with consumers is now one of the most important things marketers must do.

And that’s not new. But it’s clear that people no longer start out trusting and then become disappointed. The Edelman study points out that “most institutions are not trusted to introduce innovations to society.”

The media is actively distrusted. Governments and NGOs barely break 50% in terms of the number of people who trust them to integrate innovation into society (50% and 54%, respectively).

Yup. Distrust is democratized into everything.


There is some good news. Edelman found that businesses have the highest level of trust (64%) among all institutions.

As a side note: Your brand is probably more trusted than the media company you’re paying to advertise with. That might be the strongest argument for an owned media strategy in 2024.

Attention is water, trust is the reservoir

What if your brand could become not only the most trusted on a topic among your competitors but the most trusted brand, period?

If that were the goal, would you trade some attention (say traffic or engagement) for fewer but more meaningful content interactions?

Historically, marketers looked at trusted information publishers and proclaimed, “There’s no way we can compete with that magazine (or nonprofit, association, or governmental agency).”

And you were right — those publications and organizations had all the attention.

But, if trust is the valued metric, you can compete now. And you must.

Trust as a metric

I worked with a B2B financial services company targeting investors and advisors a few years ago. The company asked a sample of its target audience to rank the institution and its competition on a level of trust. We also asked them to rank a sampling of the top media companies in the space.

At that time, comparing trust in financial services brands to trust in media brands was like comparing apples and oranges. But to reach its “increase brand trust” goal, the team set a goal for its new portfolio to become one of the most trusted content brands for financial advisors and investors.

When they repeated the ranking exercise a couple of years later, the team found wonderful results. The brand had risen in trust among both its competitors and media companies. That’s wonderful from a brand recall perspective.  

But even more interesting were the results segmented from the brand’s subscribed audiences. Many of those who subscribed to the brand’s content trusted the company more than any other competitor and media companies.

These results provide a huge business case for the value of their content approach: Developing a deeper, more trusted relationship with audiences than even some of their media partners had. 

It was a slower build and possibly more expensive to acquire a subscriber than a lead. But it paid off in a more valuable customer relationship — loyalty. 

Playing the short, long game of trust

In the trust economy, value accrues when an audience trusts the brand and shares, evangelizes, and draws more people to that trust.

The short-term game of attention used to be the fastest way to show value in marketing. The goal was to distribute the most innovative thing, the most differentiated opinion, or the catchiest slogan to persuade potential buyers at the exact moment they need something.

But that game is only winnable when you start from a position of trust. Of course, you can’t earn trust without first having someone’s attention. The need for attention isn’t gone.

But now, you need to earn trust (by delivering value) in the first moments after you’ve earned the attention.

Yup. Marketing in the trust economy is harder.

You’ve got to demonstrate trustworthiness better, faster, and consistently. It’s the short, long game of a modern marketing strategy.

Gathering attention just doesn’t cut it anymore. Holding attention doesn’t work that well, either. You can hold someone’s attention for a bit without making them care.

The opportunity is here. The democratization of distrust can transform what’s possible. Your content can turn your brand into the most exciting and trusted resource for your customers.

It’s up to you to be worthy of the trust and the opportunity.

Veranda Learning Solutions reports net loss of ₹39 crore despite revenue doubling

Despite revenue more than doubling, Veranda Learning Solutions Limited, the Chennai-based education services solutions provider, reported a net loss of ₹39 crore in the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2024.

It was the same in the same quarter last year. Revenue increased to ₹103 crore (₹48 crore). The net loss was mainly due to higher finance cost.

The financial cost for the quarter includes a non-recurring cash expense of ₹10 crores towards pre-closure charges of existing loans; ₹8 crores (₹15 crores for FY24 ) of non-cash expenses pertaining to unwinding of acquisition related liabilities and ₹7 crores (₹10 crores for FY24 ) due to acceleration of processing charges of the loans prepaid, according to a release.

Advertising and business promotion expenses for Q4’24 & FY24 stood at ₹13 crores and ₹49 crores respectively.

For FY24, the net loss was ₹76 crore (₹79 crore) while revenue more than doubled to ₹362 crore ₹161 crore).

In the current year, the company has seen an increase in finance and depreciation costs due to accounting adjustments pertaining to the acquisitions completed.

The depreciation costs include a non-cash expense of ₹36.38 crores arising due to the amortization of intangible assets acquired.

The finance cost includes a non-cash expense of ₹14.63 crores arising due to unwinding of acquisition related liabilities and a non-cash expense of ₹9.92 crores due to acceleration of processing charges of the loans prepaid . The finance cost also includes a non-recurring cost of ₹10.25 crores due to prepayment of existing loans.

The total number of students trained by the Veranda Group for FY24 stood at 6,93,874 with 1,36,194 students trained during this quarter, the release said.

In FY24, the company not only saw its operating revenues double to surpass ₹360 crores but also achieved a positive EBITDA for the first time.

“This is a testament to our team’s dedication. This has been driven by strategic consolidation of high-quality brands into our portfolio, significantly enhancing our market presence and performance,” he said..

“As we set our sights on FY25, we anticipate maintaining this momentum to achieve revenues exceeding ₹550 crores with an ambitious EBITDA margin of 25 per cent,” he said.

The company’s share price on the NSE closed at ₹173, down by 1.56 per cent.
