Gold Prices Fall Over Rs 7,000 From Its Peak: Is It Good Time To Buy?

Last Updated:

Gold prices are expected to rise amid uncertainties around ongoing trade discussions, providing fresh upside momentum, according to experts.

Though the gold price on Friday is lower by around Rs 7,000 than its peak price of over Rs 1 lakh, it is higher than the rate recorded in the previous session on Thursday.

Gold prices have declined by over Rs 7,000 from its all-time high of Rs 1 lakh in the past 10 days. On Friday (May 2), the price of the yellow metal stood at nearly Rs 93,300 per 10 grams on the MCX, compared with the Rs 1,00,484 rate recorded on April 22, 2025.

Though the gold price on Friday is lower by around Rs 7,000 than its peak price of over Rs 1 lakh, it is higher than the gold rate recorded in the previous session on Thursday, May 1.

On Thursday, the yellow metal had stood at Rs 92,325 per 10 grams on the MCX.

Jateen Trivedi, vice-president and research analyst (commodity and currency) at LKP Securities, said, “Gold prices on Friday rebounded strongly after a minor gap-up opening, gaining Rs 950 to trade at Rs 93,325 on the MCX.”

In the international market, Comex gold found crucial support near $3,200, with sentiment stabilising amid persistent ambiguity over US-led trade deal, he added.

Should You Buy Gold?

Experts said gold prices are expected to rise amid uncertainties around ongoing trade discussions, providing fresh upside momentum.’

“Gold as a commodity is expected to perform well in 2025 despite of gold posted 30% return since last year. On April 22, Gold prices touched peak of Rs 1 lakh per 10 grams. Historically, Gold has posted a 15% CAGR return since 2001. Gold return has also beat the Inflation and has outperform inflation more than 2% to 4% from 1995 onwards,” said Manoj Kumar Arora, managing director at Almondz Global.

He added that gold prices are expected to remain elevated with continuous buying from central banks on concerns of geopolitical tensions, tariff threats, inflation concerns in US.

China continued to accumulate Gold at a faster pace, as of March 2025, China holds 2,292 tons Central Bank around the world added 1,000 tons of gold annually in the past three years as on 2024. As of March 2025, RBI holding have reached a record level of 879 tonnes, Arora said.

Tariff-driven recession and stagflation risks are forecasted to continue for gold’s structural bull run. We keep our positive stance on Gold with strong central banks’ purchases and demand stemming from falling Treasury yields that will push gold prices to continue to be one of the best-performing assets in 2025, he said.

“Investors can continue to invest via Gold ETFs, as ETFs considered to be low-cost investment,” Arora added.

LKP Securities’ Jateen Trivedi said the lack of clarity and shifting stances from the US on ongoing trade discussions has led market participants to unwind short positions in gold, providing fresh upside momentum. With trade talks showing little concrete progress, safe-haven interest is returning gradually.

“Volatility is expected to remain elevated, with gold likely to trade in a broad range of Rs 92,000-Rs 94,500 in the coming sessions,” Trivedi added.

Kotak Securities in its note said, “Despite recent data showing a US economic contraction in Q1 and a flat PCE price index in March, improved risk appetite driven by strong tech earnings has reduced bets on US interest rate cuts. Investors are now focused on the upcoming nonfarm payrolls report for further insights into the Federal Reserve’s policy direction. The potential for US-China trade negotiations is a key factor weighing on safe-haven demand for gold.”

Elon Musk to Likely Integrate Crypto Payments Into X, Says Anthony Scaramucci

Elon Musk is once again making waves, this time with bold plans to transform X (formerly Twitter) into a comprehensive “Everything App.” At the core of this vision is a financial ecosystem powered by X Money—an upcoming payment platform that may soon support cryptocurrency transactions.

X Money aims to turn the X platform into more than just a social network. With features combining messaging, Grok AI integration, and digital transactions, it’s shaping up to be a one-stop app for communication and finance. Expected to launch in mid-2025, the platform could position X as a serious competitor to leading fintech apps, offering users a seamless experience for both social and financial interactions.

Crypto Integration on the Horizon

Anthony Scaramucci, founder of SkyBridge Capital, recently emphasized that Musk is likely to embed cryptocurrency payments into X’s payment system. Given Musk’s longstanding interest in decentralized finance—demonstrated through initiatives at Tesla and SpaceX—this move isn’t surprising.

By allowing crypto payments, X could appeal to a broader, tech-savvy audience already engaged with digital assets like Bitcoin and Dogecoin. The move aligns with Musk’s vision of diversifying payment options and fostering financial innovation.

Navigating Regulatory Roadblocks

However, introducing crypto transactions isn’t without challenges. Regulatory compliance will be a major hurdle, especially as global financial watchdogs keep a close eye on digital asset usage. To roll out a secure and legally sound crypto service, Musk’s team will have to navigate complex legal frameworks across multiple jurisdictions.

A Super App for the West?

Musk’s ambition to build a super app similar to China’s WeChat is bold—but it won’t be easy. The Western market is already saturated with dominant players in both fintech and social media, making it a tough space to disrupt.

Still, the idea of integrating social networking, AI, and cryptocurrency into one platform is a compelling one. If Musk can overcome the regulatory and competitive challenges, X could redefine how users interact online—financially and socially.

As the world watches, the big question remains: Can Elon Musk turn X into the West’s first true Super App?

100 Men vs. 1 Gorilla: Who Wins if It’s King Kong?

I love hypothetical questions. I would rather fight 100 duck-sized horses than one horse-sized duck. But I’m still scratching my head over a viral question that’s romping around social media: Who would win if you pitted 100 average men against one gorilla?

Let’s not stop there, though. We’re going to expand that hypothetical situation. What if the gorilla in question is movie villain-hero King Kong? I talked with an expert to get some perspective.

The original question seemed to take off from a post on X that racked up nearly 300 million views. The tweet suggested the men could handle the gorilla if the humans were dedicated enough to the task.

Even YouTube personality MrBeast weighed in, tweeting, “Need 100 men to test this, any volunteers?” along with an image of a group of men facing off against one very large gorilla.

Elon Musk, DOGE czar and CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, seemed to volunteer, responding, “Sure, what’s the worst that could happen?”

Humans aren’t known for fighting fair.

“A fight between 100 men and one gorilla might lead to a lot of dead men, but we all know that men will come with weapons, strategies, drones, fire and other clever tricks,” wrote Renaud Joannes-Boyau, professor in geochronology and geochemistry at Southern Cross University in Australia. He suggested humans might lose many of the battles, but would eventually win the fight.

Joannes-Boyau ultimately takes a philosophical approach to the question.

“Perhaps the real takeaway message isn’t who wins in a fight, but to realize that two very different and yet very close cousins have walked two separate evolutionary roads, each in their own distinct way,” he wrote.

Chill gorillas

The 100-men question seems to imply an angry, vengeful gorilla. There wouldn’t be much of a fight if the gorilla just sits there and snacks on leaves.

Gorillas are “typically quite gentle, often only showing aggression when it comes to protecting their family, or when necessary, to keep the peace within the family,” said John Griffioen, assistant director of animal programs and conservation at the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas.

Griffioen shared some eye-catching statistics, saying silverback gorillas are capable of lifting over 2,000 pounds and have a bite force with about 1,300 pounds of pressure per square inch.

The thought question is entertaining, but it glosses over a sobering reality. “Gorillas are critically endangered, and populations continue to decline,” said Griffioen. “With so much already stacked against them, we shouldn’t be worried about fighting them, we should be fighting for them.”

Griffioen would rather those 100 hypothetical men put their energy into conservation efforts.

Get your Kong on

So anyway, that’s real-life gorillas. Now let’s give the big primate an upgrade.

Kong depictions on film have varied since his debut in the now-classic 1933 King Kong movie.

In the 2005 Peter Jackson movie, King Kong was said to be 25 feet tall, so let’s use that as our benchmark. A real male silverback gorilla can typically reach 5 feet in height, so our fictional Kong is at least five times bigger than the real thing. That means we have a super-ape that could handily wipe out multiple men with one swinging fist.

Joannes-Boyau accepted the challenge of considering the Kong hypothetical, noting the strength gap between human and giant gorilla would be extreme. “Faced with such a large and powerful animal, 100 unarmed humans would be unlikely to stand a chance,” he told CNET.

Human ingenuity — and the ability to strategize, collaborate and use technology — is the X factor. “In a raw power contest against most animals, we would often lose,” Joannes-Boyau said. “But evolution didn’t design us to win wrestling matches; it designed us to outthink, not outmuscle.”

In my unscientific estimation, I’m giving Kong the advantage against 100 men. But don’t take my word for it. Watch some King Kong movies and decide for yourself.

Here are some top streaming options to get you in the mood to debate the 100 men against one gorilla question.

Widespread deadly infection putting Americans at risk, doctor warns

Five years after the worldwide hyperfocus on COVID-19 began, some are concerned about the next pandemic — whether it could be caused by influenza, bird flu or another pathogen.

Too easily overlooked are non-influenza, non-COVID viruses and bacteria that are burgeoning and spreading unchecked — both in the U.S. and around the world. While they may not cause the next pandemic, they do cause a lot of illness and death.

One such bacteria is Streptococcus Group A, an old enemy that colonizes the throat and tonsils of close to 20% of U.S. children, according to Dr. Joshua Osowicki, team leader and senior research fellow at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia.

CDC WARNS OF INCREASE IN INVASIVE STRAIN OF STREP THROAT IN US

This problematic bacterial strain is easily treated with penicillin drugs when it causes a clinical infection, Osowicki told Fox News Digital in an on-camera interview. (See the video at the top of this article.)

But the problem, he said, is that because the bacteria may be harbored, the diagnosis isn’t always found early enough.

The Streptococcus Group A bacteria has been on the rise around the world, doctors warn. (iStock)

Scarlet fever and rheumatic fever/rheumatic heart disease can result from recurrent or untreated strep — and they are on the increase again in areas without adequate medical care, including parts of the U.S.

“Rheumatic heart disease is a chronic, non-infectious illness that occurs after untreated group-based streptococcal infections — and almost certainly after multiple untreated, group-based streptoococcus infections,” Osowicki said.

STREP THROAT INFECTIONS HAVE SPIKED ABOVE PRE-COVID HIGHS, SAYS REPORT: ‘WE’VE MISSED CASES’

His research reveals that the prevalence of a life-threatening invasive version of strep Group A — which can include deep-rooted skin infections, sepsis, meningitis and deadly pneumonia — is on the rise around the world.

The aggressive skin infections, which are associated with intravenous drug use, can lead to the need for repeated surgeries, along with antibiotics.

In the U.S., there have been more than double the annual incidents of invasive Group A strep in 10 states, affecting about 35 million Americans between 2013 and 2022, with 21,000 cases and about 2,000 deaths, according to Osowicki.

“In many ways, it’s a pandemic in plain sight,” he said of Group A strep, adding that close to a billion people likely experience symptomatic disease from the bacteria each year.

“It actually does its damage in severe, life-threatening cases before the patient receives antibiotics.”

The important thing with group A strep, according to the doctor, is that antibiotic resistance isn’t the primary issue.

“Group A strep is reliably killed by penicillin — and has been since 1941 when penicillin was introduced,” Osowicki noted.

Child strep test

Strep A colonizes the throat and tonsils of close to 20% of U.S. children, according to the researcher. (iStock)

“The point is that it actually does its damage in severe, life-threatening cases before the patient receives antibiotics. There’s this period where it is too hard to diagnose and treatment comes too late.”

In those cases, he said, the patients need ICUs, surgery and “the most intensive treatment we have to offer.”

Among patients over the age of 65 or so, a quarter of them will die with this form of the disease, according to Osowicki.

Need for a vaccine

There is not currently a vaccine for Group A strep.

While the more common form of strep throat and minor skin infections are “less scary,” Osowicki warned of the dangers of overlooking the more invasive version of the disease.

EXPOSURE TO TOXIN INCREASES COLORECTAL CANCER RISK AMONG YOUNGER ADULTS, STUDY FINDS

“We look away sometimes from the life-threatening infections that we struggle to prevent, diagnose and treat, (until) these become the front-page sepsis cases that you see in the newspaper many weeks of the year,” he said.

“They’re headline-catching cases. They’re the cases like Rory Staunton in New York, whose tragic death (in 2012 from sepsis) really triggered the state census mandates across the U.S.”

There are up to 10 different group-based strep vaccines in development, ranging from entirely pre-clinical vaccines that have never seen a person to vaccines that have been tested in phase 1 trials. (iStock)

The need for an effective vaccine is clear — both for invasive strep and the more common variety. Osowicki and others in his group are working hard on developing them.

“The current thrust of my research is all vaccine-related,” he shared. “We do what are called human challenge trials, where we deliberately infect healthy adult volunteers with group A strep, painting it on their tonsils. And we do that in a very careful way, in an inpatient environment.”

The researchers also provide early antibiotic treatments and collect throat swabs, blood and saliva to study how the human-only pathogen works and to explore ways to stop it.

“The ultimate goal is that it becomes a really high-powered platform to establish the efficacy of vaccines,” said Osowicki.

There are many vaccine candidates in various stages of development, from the protein-adjuvant kind (like Shingrix or the Novavax COVID vaccine) to the MRNA platform and various other kinds, the researcher said.

“We’re working with every vaccine company that has a group-based streptococcal vaccine candidate in development,” he said.

The goal, the researcher said, is to “create a vaccine that the world wants, that the world accepts, that the world says is safe, and that will help our children.”

He said he is concerned about vaccine skepticism, particularly after the COVID pandemic, which can keep people from trusting the emerging science.

Still, the researcher is excited about the future of the strep A vaccine and others, though he expects it could take at least five to 10 years before a worthy candidate reaches doctors’ offices.

The new vaccine will be geared toward adults with skin infections, as well as the many millions of children who are at risk of both mild and severe disease.

Snake Falls Into Womans Drink At US Restaurant, Leaves Her Horrified

Some restaurant experiences are unforgettable for the wrong reasons. Ever found a hair in your food, spotted a bug on your plate, or bit into something that definitely does not belong? For one American woman, named Carletta Andrews, things went to a whole new level of bizarre when a snake dropped into her drink. Yes, you read it right. Carletta Andrews got a real shock when a baby snake fell straight from the ceiling and landed in her margarita at The Patron Mexican Restaurant and Cantina on the evening of April 16.

In a chat with 8News, Carletta recalled that incident. She said, “I leaned in to take a sip and I noticed something hit me in the forehead and I looked at my husband like what was that..When I turned around, I saw the snake in my margarita.”

Carletta Andrews also mentioned that the snake “was moving.” She added, “It started wrapping around my straw.” She said that everything after that is kind of a blur. She remembered workers trying to remove the snake using a stick, but it was actually another customer who eventually picked it up and let it loose outside.

“I kept saying please don’t let it go in my purse,” she recalled. “I left shaking, I was traumatised.” The restaurant reportedly offered to move her to another booth, but she just wanted to head out.

This is not the first time a snake in food has made headlines. Back in March, a man named Rayban Naklengboon from Thailand found a snake inside his popsicle. Yes, you read that right – a black-and-yellow snake was literally frozen in the ice. Rayban posted the shocking discovery on Facebook and shared photos of the popsicle with the reptile clearly visible. Click here to read the full story.

So next time you are about to dig into your snack or dessert, maybe give it a second look – just to be sure there is no unexpected “ingredient” lurking inside! Better safe than sorry, right?

China's inbound tourism trips for May Day holiday surge to 173%

Driven by China’s departure tax refund policy, the number of inbound tourism orders for China’s five-day May Day holiday period has surged to 173 percent year on year, according to Trip.com Group, a leading online travel agency in China.

As one of the popular destinations for inbound tourism, east China’s Shanghai has further optimized the departure tax refund consumption environment during the holiday to allow foreign tourists to enjoy more convenient services.

Since China launched a series of new visa-free entry and transit policies, the number of foreign tourists entering Shanghai has increased significantly. In the first quarter of this year, the city received 1.743 million international tourists, a year-on-year increase of 37.1 percent.

China has updated its tax refund policy for foreign tourists, moving from a refund-upon-departure to a refund-upon-purchase model. This change comes as more international visitors travel to China for shopping, purchasing items such as food, clothing, handicrafts, mobile phones, and computers.

Recently, the country has introduced a series of new measures to optimize payment convenience for foreign tourists. Under the new policy, the minimum purchase threshold for departure tax refunds has been reduced to 200 yuan (about $27.8) from 500 yuan.

As one of the pilot cities for the “refund-upon-purchase” policy, Shanghai currently has 587 tax refund stores, of which 284 shops offer the policy.

“In recent years, Shanghai’s departure tax refund sales have always been among the highest in the country,” said Liu Min, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, noting that the city’s tax refund stores issued 86,000 tax refund forms to foreign tourists, with sales of tax refunded goods reaching 2.37 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 86.6 percent.

According to Bloomberg, the World Tourism and Travel Council predicted that Chinese tourists’ domestic travel spending is expected to reach $968 billion this year, up nearly 19 percent from 2024.

Virginia Messina, vice president of the council, said China’s tourism industry recovered strongly last year, and the outlook is quite optimistic.

Meanwhile, a series of measures launched by China such as visa-free policies to attract foreign tourists will also be effective, Bloomberg noted. It is estimated that international tourists’ consumption in China this year will reach 1.04 trillion yuan, an increase of 13 percent over 2019.

According to the Travel And Tour World magazine, China is beating the United States in global tourism by offering visa-free and simplified entry policies alongside convenient transportation and warm hospitality, which all make traveling to China more convenient and attractive for international tourists.
